What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is an ancient system of natural healing that originated in Nepal over 5,000 years ago. The word Ayurveda comes from the Sanskrit words “Ayu” (life) and “Veda” (knowledge), meaning “the knowledge of life.” It focuses on maintaining balance in the body, mind, and spirit through diet, lifestyle, herbal treatments, and therapies.

The Three Doshas

Ayurveda believes that the body is made up of three main energies, known as Doshas. These energies help determine your physical and mental characteristics. Each person has a unique combination of these doshas.

  1. Vata (Air & Space): Controls movement, including breathing, blood flow, and waste elimination.
  2. Pitta (Fire & Water): Governs digestion, metabolism, and energy production.
  3. Kapha (Earth & Water): Provides structure, strength, and stability to the body and mind.

When these doshas are balanced, your body and mind stay healthy. Imbalance can lead to illness.

The Five Elements (Pancha Mahabhutas)

Ayurveda teaches that the universe is made up of five elements, which also exist within the body. These elements are:

  1. Earth (Prithvi)
  2. Water (Jala)
  3. Fire (Tejas)
  4. Air (Vayu)
  5. Space (Akasha)

Each dosha is associated with specific elements. For example, Vata is made up of air and space, while Pitta is composed of fire and water. And Kapha is made up of water and earth.
